VIDEO: Philips’ Ultra-Widescreen Cinema 21:9 TV
Yesterday Philips unveiled what it thinks is the next big thing in TVs, a super-widescreen model that does away with the usual 16:9 format for a 21:9 one instead. The result in the Cinema 21:9 [they like to say Cinema 21 by 9] which is a very wide widescreen LCD TV indeed. We covered it first here. The idea is that the TV - which is 56in by the way - lets you watch movies just how the director intended. Up close, you really do have to shake your head because it is really, really wide but the movies on show look hugely impressive. Philips is also boasting that this Full HD TV will be the fastest on the market with a claimed response time of just 0.01 seconds which is very impressive indeed. Philips says that 90% of DVDs and Blu-ray movies currently for sale on Amazon can be watched in 21:9. Movies or TV broadcasts in 16:9 can be watched with vertical bars on the sides or can be stretched 'with only minor distortion', according to Philips. We'd like to see that in action though before passing judgement. The TV sports 5 HDMI slots for all your HD and console gadgetry and features Philips' cool AmbiLight technology on 3 sides. it will ship this Spring. There's no price tag but don't expect more than penny back from £3,000, if you ask us. We'd like to be proved wrong though.-Martin Lynch TV HDTV ambilight
