Toshiba Recalls T Series Notebooks Due To Burn Hazard

Toshiba has issued a voluntary recall of its 𔢢 and 𔢧 13.3-inch notebook computers due to the possible risk of fire. This recall affects a good 41,000 notebooks sold worldwide and includes the Satellite 𔢧, 𔢧D, and Satellite Pro 𔢢 notebooks. The issue is due to the potential overheating of the notebook’s AC adapter power plug, and Toshiba has already received several incidents of the notebooks overheating and deforming the plastic around the power plug. Owners of affected models can check if their notebook is affected by downloading a new BIOS update that will check if the notebook is overheating, disable the external power port when necessary, and display a message to bring the notebook to Toshiba for a free repair.

NVIDIA GeForce 400M Series Launched

NVIDIA’s “Fermi″ architecture hits portable computers with the launch of the GeForce 400M family of chips that covers the “performance” (from 48 cores) and “enthusiast” (up to 288 cores) segments. With DirectX 11 features and better performance per square mm (or per Watt), the GeForce 400M Series ups the ante when compared with the previous 300M Series, by boosting the performance by as much as 40% (according to NVIDIA) - within the same footprint and power/thermal envelope. As one could expect, all the new chips support CUDA, NVIDIA’s architecture for non-graphics computing that can could boost physics, photo processing or audio/video compression (with apps support).

AMD delivers cheap DisplayPort adapters

AMD delivers cheap DisplayPort adapters

AMD’s Eyefinity technology is certainly one of the more impressive methods to fill up your peripheral vision with nothing but pixels, but it isn’t exactly the cheapest way to go about it if you’re relying on DisplayPort-capable monitors. This has caused many gamers to purchase $100 DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters which goes a long way in raising the cost of adoption by a fair bit. AMD hopes to make things more affordable by developing converters which are tipped to cost a fraction of that - we’re looking at $30 thereabouts. Hopefully it will roll out sooner rather than later.

Sony 3D Vaio notebook spotted at IFA 2010

Engadget managed to take a peek at a yet-unreleased Sony 3D Vaio notebook which is tipped to arrive in the market next year. That particular notebook is said to come with a 3D display that has a 240Hz refresh rate, and you can be sure that the 3D display itself will not be manufactured by Sharp because you will need to utilize Bravia shutter glasses instead. What was shown off at IFA 2010 was just a prototype model with a 16-inch display and innards of a Vaio F. Hopefully more light on this notebook will be shed when CES 2011 rolls around, and will Sony bundle the shutter glasses with each purchase, or will they take this opportunity to charge even more money as a separate purchase?

Acer Aspire One Happy drops model numbers

Looks like Acer has finally realized that having a slew of alphanumeric model numbers for their Aspire One range of netbooks might just get a tad too confusing after a while, which is why we’re ecstatic that the latest model is known as the Acer Aspire One Happy. Basically, it doesn′t seem as though it is new, since this is more or less a rebranded Aspire One D255 that comes with a bunch of new bright color options - presumably to make you happy, of course. Both the keyboard and display bezel are white in color, while the lid and palm rest area will be splashed with bright colors to lift up your mood. As for its hardware, expect to find an Intel Atom N550 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM and Windows 7 Starter Edition as the operating system of choice. We hope to see this hit the market sooner rather than later though.

Smart Plus combo device excites with convergence capabilities

The Smart Plus would be a new convergence device that might just tickle your fancy, especially since it will merge the functionalities of a laptop case, a projector keyboard as well as a smartphone. You won’t find any display on this or a dedicated hard drive, since the smartphone itself will have a processor that is powerful enough to run the whole proceedings, while within the case you will find a projector that beams images, eliminating the need for a traditional display. The phone itself can split up into two parts, where the bottom segment will be used for gaming controls while the top half is a touchscreen half , docks with the projector board. We can just imagine how much of a power guzzler this will be should it ever roll off the manufacturing line…

Packard Bell Dot SE netbook arrives in Europe

Since Acer owns Packard Bell, don’t be surprised that the Packard Bell Dot SE which will arrive in Europe closely resembles the recently unveiled Acer Aspire One D255 netbook. When it comes down to specifications, everything is more or less identical - case in point, a 10-inch display, an Intel Atom N550 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB of DD̶ memory (why not DD̷, we wonder), a 250GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Starter Edition as the operating system of choice. Its battery is able to chug along for around 7.5 hours which ought to be sufficient in this day and age, although not really suitable for long haul flights if you’re a frequent traveler. Expect the Packard Bell Dot SE to retail for 400 Euros across the pond, so don’t expect to see it arrive Stateside since you can get the identical Acer Aspire One D255 here instead.

MSI WindBOX III powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processors

Nettops are meant to be the stationary version of netbooks - relatively low-powered computing devices which has enough juice to get the job done where standard computing tasks are concerned, but then they aren’t powerful enough to handle games in high resolution. Well, MSI aims to buck the trend this time around with the WindBOX III - while it isn’t exactly a nettop since it does not rely on an Atom processor but a Core 2 Duo (from Intel as well, of course), it packs more of a punch than usual. Coupled with an Intel GS45 and ICH9M chipset alongside GMA 4500 graphics, it is more than able to handle 1080p HD video playback without missing a beat. Other features also include DirectX10 graphics, DVI and HDMI outputs, a half dozen USB ports, two powered COM ports and a couple of internal mini PCIe slots. Connectivity-wise, you get integrated 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth support alongside up to 4GB of RAM if performance in a small package is what you’re looking for. No idea on pricing though.
