eBooks Now Outnumber Games In The App Store

If you needed additional information to convince you that eBooks are getting more and more popular, just check out the latest stats from Mobclix, a mobile device advertising agency. Now it seems that the number of eBook apps have outnumbered games for the first time, with 27,000 eBook apps compared to 25,400 games. The number of new eBook apps introduced over the last month also outnumbers that of games, at 158 versus 71. With the advent of the iPad, do you think that the gap will be further widened, or will the large screen of the iPad help increase the popularity of games in the App Store?

Verizon Sees The iPad As An Opportunity To Sell Data Plans

Verizon Sees The iPad As An Opportunity To Sell Data Plans

Despite Apple once again teaming up with AT&T for the iPad’s data plan, Verizon doesn’t seem to be discouraged, especially once you take a peek at the leaked memo to its staff that’s going around the Internet. Bringing up points that AT&T’s network is “overloaded”, and that the 3G version of the iPad will cost more, the carrier is aiming to persuade users to get the Wi-Fi version of the iPad and pair it up with a device like MiFi. Of course, what the memo fails to mention is that Verizon MiFi costs you $60 a month, which is twice as much that AT&T charges for its unlimited iPad plan, so you’ll be paying more in the long run. What do you think? Are you planning to purchase an iPad with an AT&T 3G plan, or go along with Verizon’s suggestion?

Is The Red Dot On The iPad Advert A Camera?

Despite the Apple site not mentioning anything about a built-in camera for the iPad, the camera rumors (and conspiracy theories) just won’t seem to die off. Now some folks have noticed that there is a tiny red dot in the latest iPad advertisement, at the 2-3 second period when the user fiddles with the iBooks app, you’ll notice that there is a tiny faint red dot at the top of the iPad. Of course, that’s far from a confirmation of a camera, and some folks are speculating that it’s an ambient light sensor. What do you think? Of course, if it were an ambient light sensor, which could be what has been crammed into the mysterious slot in the iPad’s bezel, then where would they put the camera in the future? In the end, the main question is: who in the world would be looking that closely&nbspat the ad in order to notice such a tiny detail? Video after the jump.

Mac to get Valve Steam

Mac owners can finally “enjoy” the wonders of Valve’s Steam gaming service after having PC gamers using Steam for a few years already. From April onwards, Apple-based gamers will be able to enjoy some games such as Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series via Steamworks for the Mac. Among all the Steamworks APIs, a new feature has been introduced which is known as Steam Play, enabling customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform without forking out a single cent more. All Valve Steam games will be released at the same time as that on the PC and Xbox 360.

China Unicom To Introduce iPhone With Wi-Fi In China

China Unicom To Introduce iPhone With Wi-Fi In China

If you bought a China Unicom iPhone in China, you’ll most likely have noticed that it doesn’t offer Wi-Fi, as it was initially disabled for the Chinese market, thanks to government regulations that favored the home-developed WAPI security standard. The rules have been relaxed since then, so Wi-Fi iPhones are now allowed, as long as they continue to include support for the WAPI standard as an added function. China Unicom’s Chief Executive, Chang Xiaobing, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal saying that the company would consider giving some form of compensation to existing iPhone owners in the form of improved 3G tariffs, though chances are users would much rather see Wi-Fi in their phones. Word is also going around that Unicom might lower the iPhone’s asking price from 4,999-6,999 Yuan to 3,000-3,500 Yuan, and if that’s true, it’ll certainly help boost the iPhone sales in China.

iPad parts photos point to camera

We know that the iPad has already undergone rife speculation concerning the inclusion of a front facing webcam, and here’s another piece of the puzzle that might just confirm that. The iPad frame you see here features holes to hold a webcam, and while it doesn’t seem as though it will be able to use current iSight modules, that could point to a different kind of webcam which will be implemented in due time. What do you think of all this? Could a webcam be part of the iPad’s second revision, and the manufacturers of its bezel are trying to save money by preparing for the future so that they don’t have to come up with two kinds of bezels?

Apple iKey Patent Allows You To Use Your iPhone As A Combination Lock

It seems that Apple’s iPhone can do almost anything nowadays, and if the latest tech from Apple’s iKey patent filing gets implemented, we’ll probably be able to unlock our front doors with our iPhone sometime in the near future. According to the patent, the iPhone could communicate with an external device to open a lock, and that could certainly be an RFID receiver. It’s worth noting that the app pictured above seems to have a combination lock, indicating that we’ll be able to unlock the lock by turning the iPhone just like we’d do to a traditional combination lock. It’s certainly a novel and cool idea. Could the iPhone 4G have a RFID chip included in it by default?
