Last Wednesday, we rocked San Francisco with our
Digital Summer party. We’re very excited that so many Ubergizmo fans and fashion aficionados could make it and join us to celebrate the fusion of art and technology. Digital Summer was held at Temple, one of the few sustainable night clubs in the country. Intel, the gold sponsor, showcased its innovative
Internet connected signage concept featuring a large translucent touchscreen displaying a virtual store demo. Attendees
also had the opportunity to recycle their old phones, thanks to Verizon Wireless, our silver sponsor,
via its
HopeLine® Program.

MPEG LA Opens Up H.264 for HTML5 Video in Preemptive Strike Against Google

MPEG LA Opens Up H.264 for HTML5 Video in Preemptive Strike Against Google

In a move to circumvent Google’s WebM video format from gaining traction as the Internet is exploring HTML5 options, the MPEG Licensing Association, also known as MPEG LA, is making its own H.264 format open and available for free Internet videos.

MPEG LA had before extended its grace period before collecting royalties and licensing fees for Internet-based videos using the H.264 AVC format until 2015, but the move today would make extend the grace period indefinitely. However, licensee fees will still be collected for video formats that consumers pay for, such as Hulu content, encoded Blu-ray discs, and other paid downloadable videos.

It is expected that those who use Google′s WebM format will face licensing challenges of their own. Although Google had acquired the VP8 codec from Oю, the MPEG LA believes that some technologies found within the VP8 codec is covered by patents owned by its member companies. If that’s true, users may not want to face the headache of trying to sort out patents, licensing issues, fees, and royalties, and may not want to switch from the now free H.264 format to Google′s WebM.

Sony Announces Its NX810 BRAVIA 3D TVs

Sony has unveiled its latest 3D TVs in the US, bearing the NX810 model number, replacing the current NX800. The design is sleek and elegant as always, and features built-in Wi-Fi, Edge LED lit display, widgets, an ambient light sensor and 3D support. The downside of the NX810 series is that despite its price, it won’t come bundled with 3D glasses, so you’ll need to purchase the glasses and emitter separately in order to enjoy the 3D goodness. Microsoft Kinect Introduced by Cirque du Soleil at E3

Microsoft Kinect Introduced by Cirque du Soleil at E3

Microsoft has just introduced Kinect with the help of Cirque du Soleil in Los Angeles at E3. Formerly known s Project Natal, Kinect is a technology based on a camera that can capture color and depth information. It is capable of tracking movement of the whole body, which is not the case for arch-rivals Sony and Nintendo where it is the motion of sensors that is tracked. Despite being quite impressive, tonight’s demonstration was aimed at convincing the world of the Kinect concept: “the human is the ultimate controller evolution”.

The concept has clearly been well communicated and well received by the audience. The demos were convincing and many aspects of how Kinect could be used have been shown tonight. For the first time, we’ve seen something that looks like commercial games. In sports games, players have to run to win. The dance game demo looked like Dance Dance Revolution but 10X better. And the most memorable game demo is the Star Wars game where the player controls a Jedi, including a light saber duel with Vader himself. A thunderous applause followed that one.

Of course, in a completely controlled demo environment, and with a budget that must have been one of the highest –ever- for ʵ, it’s no surprise that the impact was significant. However, we can’t give you a clear picture before we will try it for ourselves in the next few days. That will be the real test.

That said, it is clear that when it comes to motion sensing communications, Microsoft is much better positioned than Nintendo and Sony: the concept of using the body rather than a sensor resonates much better with most people because it seems to make more sense, and the possibilities are indeed superior. Now, we have to see if the implementation can live up to the legend.

Microsoft Kinect Goes Official

Microsoft Kinect Goes Official

The name of it was leaked just a short while ago, and now the Microsoft Kinect (previously, dubbed Project Natal) has gone official. Aside from the confirmation of the product name, some information on a few games were also mentioned, including a yoga game, dancing game, Kinect Sports, Kinectimals (a pet game), and of course, the all-important Start Wars game, that lets you fulfill your Jedi fantasies. We’re really looking forward to the Microsoft Kinect, but Microsoft hasn’t given any information on the price or release date just yet, though hopefully more information on this will be shed at the upcoming E3 conference, which is just around the corner. Will the Microsoft Kinect, PlayStation Move or Nintendo Wii eventually win the motion sensing war?
