Dell Mini 10 GPS Option, Hands-On

We just had our hands on the upcoming GPS option for the Dell mini 10 (no hack involved). The optional upgrade comes in the form of a mini-PCI module that includes a GPS chip. With this version, Dell also plans to deliver an HD display (1366×768) already present in the $449 Dell mini 10. Location-based software is also included with Loki, a software that can find your location based on surrounding WIFI networks, and most importantly, a desktop version of co-pilot live.

Clearly, Dell’s goal is not to replace your car’s integrated navigation, or your handheld personal navigation device. Instead, Dell thinks that GPS/location based service is a long-term trend that the company should work on today, starting with early adopters who might already seek this particular option.&nbsp

Sony NAS-Z200iR iPod Dock

Sony is back with a brand new iPod dock in the form of the NAS-Z200iR which functions pretty much the same as with other iPod docks, featuring an integrated FM radio, a CD player alongside Wi-Fi connectivity for greater musical options sans wires, DLNA streaming and a remote control that is equipped with a 3.5″ LCD display for easier navigation. You can also use the USB port to hook up another portable media player of your choice just in case you’re tired of the tunes on your iPod. There is no word on pricing, but we do know the NAS-Z200iR will arrive in Europe sometime this September.

Star Wars Magnet Set

Seems that the Star Wars goldmine looks set to continue on for generations, making sure that no one with the surname Lucas will ever go hungry again even into the next millenium. After all, if these Star Wars magnet sets can sell, anything slapped with Star Wars figures will surely be able to make some money for the Lucas clan. Imagine toilet paper bearing the face of the Emperor and his many past apprentices, alongside the tagline concocted by a dyslexic Darth Vader - “Wipe your Sith with this!”

NES Controller iPhone Dock

The NES controller seems to be one of the more versatile retro gaming peripheral that can be turned into something apart from its original use with enough imagination, and the latest iteration would be an iPhone dock. Created by iPhone.fr forum member WCR to commemorate his recent acquisition of the new iPhone 3GS, this is the merger of both old and new guards where technology is concerned, but too bad you won’t be able to play games on the iPhone using this.

Asus RT-N16 Wireless-N Gigabit Router

Asus has just rolled out its RT-N16 Wireless-N Gigabit router that is tipped to offer up to 300Mbps maximum wireless throughput speeds, and this is a figure we′ll never get to see in real life usage unless the land you’re living in is called Utopia. The RT-N16 comes with more video memory than the computers in the mid-1990s, carrying 128MB of video memory while boasting an advanced CPU which is touted to offer right times the performance in benchmark tests compared to similar products. Be it smooth file transfers and downloads, video streaming, wireless gaming and VoIP calls, the Asus RT-N16 is said to handle all of those with aplomb. Dell Working On An Android PDA?

Dell Working On An Android PDA?
This is supposedly a Dell Android Smartphone

The Wall Street Journal mentions an Android pocket device. Here’s the description from their source: ” slightly larger than Apple Inc.’s iPod Touch, which is similar to the iPhone but does not have cellphone capabilities”. Wow, how many characters do you need to say “PDA″ or “PMP” (Personal Digital Assistant and Portable Media Player)?

Of course, Dell declined to comment on an unannounced product, but it doesn’t take much of an effort to speculate that the device will be an ARM-powered iPod touch competitor. The PDA market is pretty much dead, but PMPs like the iPhone touch still exist, even if recent numbers suggest that iPod is on the decline, most likely because of the iPhone.

Dell is also said to be developing Android netbooks and even smartphones. Let’s wait and see.

Asustek Lowers Prices Of Older Eee PCs

Asustek has started to reduce prices of its ageing 7″ and 8.9″ Eee PCs, presumably to clear stocks of it. Could this move point toward a brand new range of Eee PCs? We certainly hope not, but for folks who have long lusted after one of those 8.9″ models can now pick up the Eee PC 900A (one of many variants) for a mere $219 after conversion, whil ethe 7″ model is going for a dirt cheap $153. If you’re one who doesn’t need to stay at the forefront of cutting edge technology, then this price cut by Asustek would certainly be welcomed.

Next Generation Atom Processors Improve On Graphics

With each new generation of processors, we end users generally benefit from improvements incorporated into such releases. Well, it seems that the new Pineview generation of Atom processors will be able to run much cooler thanks to better heat dissipation alongside support for 800MHz DDR2 RAM and a much speedier DirectX 9 graphics core. While LCD displays on such models will probably be limited to a maximum resolution of 1,366 x 768, one ought to be able to hook up a 2,048 x 1,536 monitor through a VGA port. Pineview processors will also be able to be bundled with 3rd party HD video decoders, helping netbooks handle 1080p video in the future.
