Japanese will be the blessed ones to get hold of the Nintendo DSi from tomorrow onwards, as it retails for $192 (after conversion, no thanks to the stronger yen) there in an effort to revive slowing domestic sales ahead of the upcoming holiday season. DS sales in Japan have plummeted from its favorable highs for quite a few months already, with Sony’s PSP taking top spot as it tries to narrow the gap with Nintendo’s runaway winner. So far, 200,000 units have been shipped for the three-day weekend, and Nintendo plans to ship another 100,000 units from November 4th onwards. The rest of the world will have to wait, as usual.

Sony and Universal have teamed up to develop POP - a self-proclaimed “instant entertainment 24/7″ vending machine that will be arriving on UK shores this holiday season. Unlike other machines that have media players on offer, this one provides the content to keep you entertained on the go, assuming you failed to refill your iPod with new songs right before that trans-continental flight. All content can be downloaded directly onto a memory card, USB flash drive, portable media player or other (USB-supporting) portable device. In addition, you also have the choice of picking up media-based content on DVD and Blu-ray discs, while games are also available to combat boredom.

Skunks are pretty nasty animals, but that doesn’t mean we have the right to treat them as roadkill when we see one. Those who have suffered the skunk’s spray before will definitely wish that would never happen again, and would probably have some sort of phobia towards this stinky mammal. Why not play a prank with this R/C Skunk? It does come with rather limited movement, moving backward, forward and flicking its tail with the push of a button, but it would be nicer to see some sort of built-in spray where you can fill it up with a prank smelly liquid. The R/C Skunk will retail for $39.98.

While Apple has officially stated that its recently released MacBook and MacBook Pros are able to support a maximum of 4GB RAM, along comes memory sales company Ramjet who claims otherwise, shoving in a 2GB and one 4GB stick into these new computers, letting them run just fine without any problems. Those who have been more adventurous by throwing in a couple of 4GB sticks will be greeted by stability issues in Mac OS X whenever the extra RAM is accessed, but strangely enough, 6GB is the practical limit. The more the merrier, I say!

Researchers who have been busting their rear ends on the European ROLLED project have successfully developed a flexible OLED element which is able to be mass produced using roll-to-roll printing technology. This means such OLED elements can be utilized to add value to product packages, and is widely considered to be much cheaper compared to traditional manufacturing methods. Sounds as though product packaging is going to get even more environment friendly - as it the world doesn’t already have more than enough plastics to contend with, these OLED displays could soon be dirt cheap despite being able to play back video and changing information that people toss them around like discarded tissue.

Sharp has managed to manufacture an LCD panel that features a memory function which is able to retain the displayed content long after the power supply has been cut off. This LCD panel is currently being paraded at FPD International 2008 and will come in 14.1″, 6.1″, 2.4″ and 1.7″ sizes. What makes these panels tick is the use of a cholesteric LCD material, although Sharp did not venture further by giving out more specifics such as LCD cell structure, applied voltage and power consumption. Unfortunately, it seems as though more work needs to be done as power consumption has been touted to be “relatively large”. It can′t be used outdoors though, since it has an operational temperature range of -25 to +55°C.

This is something that, quite frankly, we should have seen a lot more of by now. The Island Pilot DSe Hybrid is a yacht that is powered by either diesel or solar/electric (hence the initials DSe) and is capable of cruising at 6 knots with zero emissions in electric mode once you’ve collected enough of the sun’s rays. For cloudy days or occasions when you need to escape from a fleet of angry drug barons, the diesel mode will propel you across the water at a neck-breaking 8 knots (ok, that’s the cruising speed) and there’s an economy mode that takes a little from column A and a little from column B. It’s a roomy little number as well, with two ’staterooms’ with ensuite and a spacious ‘Great Room’ for lounging around in that boasts a 26″ LCD, Bose sound system and satellite TV. Obviously you have to pay a small fortune to be this energy conscious; the Hybrid will set you back a cool $600,000. - Paul Lester [DSEHybrid] yacht solar energy

More evidence has been revealed that shows Apple clearly puts it own profits ahead of the needs of its consumers by banning the Opera mobile browser from its App Store. This isn’t the first time it has taken a draconian stance regarding what’s allowed and what isn’t but its original stance of ‘no porn or malicious apps’ now seems to have been extended to anything that competes with Apple’s own software. Opera mini is a free browser that earns money from search engines and given the choice, may be the preferred option for many despite the fact that Safari is pretty capable (lack of flash support aside) in itself. Opera CEO Jon Stephenseon von Tetzchner confirmed the rumours by stating: “Opera’s engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won’t let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser.” Apple’s hordes of salivating fans may well claim that Safari is the bestest browser ever ever, but those used to Opera or those that don’t get on with it should be given the choice, we think. - Paul Lester [InformationWeek] Apple iPhone appstore
